Introduction

The crucial elements of headlamps are lens, reflector, and bulb. Bulb is located in the focal point of a parabolic reflector by means of standard holders fixed on the ceasing of headlamp assembly. The headlamp reflector directs the random light rays of light bulb into a concentrated beam of light. It consists of a layer of sliver, chrome, or aluminum deposited on a smooth and polished brass or glass surface. The outer surface of this layer soon blemish in the air. Thus for a glass reflector, the surface in contact with the glass is used as the reflector and its back face is usually painted with shellac varnish or something similar for protection of the coating. A main feature of automotive headlamp reflectors is to illuminate the road in front a vehicle and help other users on the road and also to protect the oncoming vehicles from being dazzled. The role of reflector in headlamp is to collect as much as light from the light source for achieving the maximum beam range. Generally shapes of reflectors are originated form a paraboloidal surface. Advance reflector technology consists of variety of configurations such as free-form reflector based technology such as Poly-Ellipsoid system. Conditions should be checked before installing reflector such as reflectors must not be cracked or broken, repaired with colored tape or other materials are not acceptable, bulb reflectors must be bright and shiny. Manufacturers mostly use reflector headlights as they are less expensive compared to projector headlights.

Market Dynamics

The primary drivers of the market include growth of automobile production with increasing urbanization. Moreover, disposable income increases with rise in automobile sale. Other factors supporting the market growth are rising demand of LED based lighting system and material developments. The high demand of LED lighting in headlamps due to its numerous benefits over halogen such as high energy efficiency, long life, lightweight and focused brightness and illumination are mainly attributed to the shift from halogen lighting to LED lighting. Advanced composite materials used in manufacturing are expected to provide numerous opportunities for the expansion of automotive headlamp reflector market. However, on the basis of application, it is mostly used in passenger cars compared to commercial vehicles. The passenger car segment is expected to drive the growth of automotive headlamp reflector market during forecast period 2018-2025.

Among all automotive headlamp reflector types, plastics held major position in terms of market share. Increasing use of plastic material in several automotive headlamp reflectors is subsidizing towards the progression of other product segment. However, plastics and aluminum material segments are expected to display strong growth during the upcoming period. There are two types of plastic material used for headlamp reflector, namely polycarbonate and polymethyl methacrylate. Polycarbonate is softer and more flexible but sensitive whereas polymethyl methacrylate is more brittle and can crack more easily but is resistant to UV. Mostly polymethyl methacrylate is used for reflector and if polycarbonate is used it must be coated with a UV inhibitor. As in Europe and North America, aluminum has gained in quantity over steel in new car models due to its benefits such as it is highly corrosion resistant, it is less expensive, ductile, relatively low melting point, relatively adundant. However, the highest production of automobiles will be witnessed in Asia, with China being the biggest producer in the world due to high demand of consumers for styling, safety and comfort; and with labor relations and manufacturing efficiency. Additionally, the growth patterns, changes in ownership structures, trade patterns and role of governments of selected Asian countries such as China, India, Indonesia and Thailand in the automobile sector.
