Introduction

The soaring demand for energy and rising fuel prices has implored us to think about the requirement of controlling and monitoring our fuel consumption. These factors have led to the rising demand for fuel management system market across the globe. The fuel management system helps to monitor and control the consumption of fuel in transportation industry, including railways, roads, air and water transportation. These fuel management systems are effectively designed to measure and manage consumption, thereby, helping to control the usage as well as save extra money. These systems are basically used for vehicle fleets that might include aircrafts and railway vehicles. These systems thereby provide us with a highly effective measure to monitor our consumption of fuel by generation of data for the purpose of optimization of fuel dispense, fuel inventories, and fuel purchases. The fuel management system finds out the amount of pumped fuel for the onsite storage management.

Market Dynamics

The reduction in the wastage of gas and oil, increase in the fuel prices, increasing number of fuel stations and vehicles and need for inventory management, are the major factors driving the growth of FMS market. The additional cost involved in installation of FMS is currently the major factor hindering the growth of FMS market. However, increasing awareness among users towards the benefits offered by installation of FMS, especially, in major oil consuming nations in APAC countries, can create an opportunity for market players.

Market Classification and Overview

The fuel management system market can be subdivided on the basis of generation, type, and geography. Based on type, the fuel management systems can be divided into onsite fuel management systems, card based fuel management systems, and total fuel management systems. Among these, the fuel transactions can be monitored by card based fuel management systems based on fueling credit card and driver’s unique pin. Tracking of fuel is done by the onsite fuel management system when it is pumped into the vehicles and it also allows the monitoring of fuel storage levels. The combination of card based management systems and onsite fuel management systems make the total fuel management systems that are used to optimize and monitor the fuel consumption levels.

On the basis of generations, the fuel management systems have been divided into five generations. The oldest systems were the first generation fuel management systems for identification of fuel consumption based on manual recording methods. In the second generation, the fuel management system was equipped with the microprocessor in order to manage the usage of fuel. However, the third generation systems were almost same as the second generation systems, but that they were either periodically or permanently connected to the personal computer. For real time data management, the fourth generation systems were connected to an Internet based server. The most advanced  and innovative systems are the fifth generation fuel management systems that have can perform automatic report generation and intelligent supervisory functions. Some of the major countries adopting FMS, globally include Canada and United States in the North America; France, Germany, U.K, Italy, and Spain in Europe; Japan, China, India in the Asia-Pacific; and Latin America and Middle East & Africa (MEA).
