The global small hydropower market is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 3.3% from 2019 to 2026 and expected to reach the market value of around US$ 3.2 Bn by 2026.

Small hydropower refers to the clean, renewable, and predictable energy source. The system is intended to produce electricity by converting the mechanical energy of flowing water into electric energy. Small hydro systems are not specifically designed to connect to the grid or to provide power to the grid these are preferably used in isolated remote areas for independent and stand-alone applications. These are the best alternative to the costly diesel generation systems in remote locations. The small hydropower plants can be further divided into mini, micro and pico hydropower and the capacity range include less than 1 MW to 50 MW.  The mini hydro refers to hydroelectric power generation with installed capacity below 10 MW, which can be suitable for the local community and industry. Micro-hydro generates electricity with the installed capacity from 5 kW to 100 kW. The pico hydro refers to the generation of hydroelectricity under 5kW, specifically for small remote communities to power bulbs, TV or radio in homes.

Market Dynamics

The increasing rural electrification projects in underdeveloped and developing economies across the globe are primarily accelerating market growth. The changing climate is pushing economies to invest in the renewable and small hydropower projects which are supporting the market value. Small hydropower dams are also needed in rural communities to sustain life are also expected to accelerate the market value. In addition, the integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) with hydropower is likely to create potential demand over the forecast timeframe 2019 to 2026.

On the other hand, the availability of substitutes at cheaper costs such as new solar photovoltaic (PV) and onshore wind power projects are expected to be the major challenge to the market growth during the estimated period. In addition, unstable supply and dependency of energy generation on seasonal highs and lows associated with the small hydropower is likely to hinder the market growth.

By capacity 1–10 MW segment projected to account major share during the forecast period.

The small hydropower projects with the capacity of 1–10 MW are expected to register a major share over the forecast period 2019 to 2026. The increasing number of small hydropower projects in various developing economies for the electrification of rural areas is primarily accelerating market growth. The ASIAN countries including China, Vietnam, and India are major contributors to the segment growth.

Mini Hydropower segment by type is expected to witness a major share over the forecast period 2019 to 2026.

On the basis of type, the mini hydropower segment projected to lead the market with major share during the estimated period 2019 to 2026. The segment is primarily gaining positive growth due to the increasing number of installation of mini hydropower plants. The idea of increasing the renewable energy share in the nation’s energy mix led by some developing economies is further propelling the segment growth.
