Introduction
Voltage controlled oscillator is an oscillator with an output signal whose power output can be varied over a range controlled by the DC voltage and whose frequency of the output is directly related to the input voltage. The frequency of oscillation varies between a few hertz and hundreds of GHz. The output frequency of the generated signal is adjusted by varying the input DC voltage. Generally, voltage controlled oscillators are used in frequency (FM), pulse (PM) modulators and phase locked loops (PPL). In addition, voltage - controlled oscillators are traditionally made of quartz crystals, although all silicon oscillators using MEMS technology have recently started to offer voltage controlled oscillators. Moreover, there is a wide range of applications, for instance in clock functions to control computer processes. They are also used to give out electronic signals in stationary as well as wireless devices like radio receivers, routers, game consoles, modems, radio transmitters, and television.
Market Dynamics
Voltage controlled oscillators are smaller in size, provide high temperature stability, immunity to false signals, adjustable bandwidth and allow the frequency of the programmable carrier, which were the limitations of conventional oscillators which resulted in enhancing features of voltage controlled oscillators and eventually the major factors driving the market growth. Furthermore, the oscillator has ability to generate varying frequency oscillations with a change in input voltage which is increasing its application in industries such as military and networking. In addition, large output frequency range and increased demand for voltage controlled oscillators is accounted for market growth. Voltage controlled oscillators produces high phase noises that restrict their applications. The introduction of high-end oscillators using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology has led to a reduction in the use of voltage controlled oscillators which is curbing the growth of market.
2-8 GHz frequency of the voltage-controlled oscillators accounts for one of the major shares in the total voltage-controlled oscillators market. 2-8 GHz frequency oscillators are generally used in the production of consumer electronics like mobile telephones, computers and others. Increasing use of consumer electronics worldwide is driving the market of voltage-controlled oscillators. 2-8 GHz frequency oscillators market is expected to grow in near future over the forecast period.
Over 14 GHz frequency oscillators are used in the industrial applications such as synthesizers, electronic music and production of phase locked loops. The market for 14 GHz oscillators accounts for moderate share in the total voltage-controlled oscillators market. Increased use of VCO’s in the production of electronic music and increased production of phase locked loops are driving the market. Over 14 GHz market is expected to grow at high pace over the forecast period.
Among VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator More Than 2 GHz) applications, networking & telecom accounts for the largest share in the global voltage oscillators market. In the production of network electronics such as satellite receivers and GPA tracking systems, VCOs are used on a very large scale. Frequency oscillators in the range of 8-14 GHz are generally used to produce networking and telecommunications electronics. The demand for telecommunications devices such as radiotelephones, radio receivers, walkie-talkies, and mobile phones is rising due to the increase in worldwide consumption eventually, driving the market growth.
In 2017, the VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator more than 2GHz) consumption in Industrial was USD 274.4 million, and is expected to reach USD 426 million in 2025. The sales market share in industrial application was 17.9% in 2017 and will be 18.1% in 2025. Industrial segment accounts for the moderate share in the global voltage oscillators market owing to the increased use of VCO’s in the production of industrial materials like synthesizers, function generators and phase-locked loops. Phase-locked loops and function generators are generally made of over 14 GHz frequency voltage-controlled oscillators. Industrial use and consumption of VCO’s is increased in the last few years due to increasing use of electronic devices, networking devices and others. Industrial market of voltage-controlled oscillators is expected to experience a growth due increasing application sector over the forecast period.
